Sammy Sosa

I will be talking about some of my favourite players over the past 25 years in the upcoming blog postings. Sammy Sosa, who won 1998’s MVP award for the National League, is who I want to talk about first. Sammy Sosa was a peculiar kind of athlete, especially considering that, if we are being completely honest, nobody had anticipated that he would win the MVP award. That is not a criticism of his abilities at the time; it is merely a description of how he progressed from being a below-average player to a superstar in the game. As few players have that kind of career within baseball itself, Baseball is the type of player you never would have anticipated to have such a high and low story.

The belief that Sosa had used performance-enhancing drugs was one of the things that truly hurt his career. I admit that I do not know a lot about the matter, and I doubt that anyone besides Sosa is aware of the full truth, but I am inclined to think that he still possessed the talent necessary to carry him to the heights he had attained. I believe he cannot be let into the hall of fame until the circumstances are completely apparent and he admits or denies with concrete evidence. Although it is impossible to tell whether a career has been affected by drugs or not, it would be unjust to clean athletes.

I do believe that he should be given the benefit of the doubt if the rumours about the steroid use are untrue. He continued to have a successful career and was a superstar throughout his peak, but being inducted into the Hall of Fame is the real apex of any career. Though it is likely he did take them, let us hope the truth comes out so we can get the entire picture.
